The fastest part-time money usually comes from gig apps that let you cash out daily, while the best hourly pay tends to come from skills like bookkeeping, writing and fitness training. Below are 12 jobs with the median hourly wage from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025 data, published in the Occupational Outlook Handbook in 2026), what it takes to start and how soon you're paid. One caveat: BLS wage data leave out self-employed workers, so gig and freelance earnings can land well above or below these medians.

Gig Driving and Delivery: Fast Cash, Real Costs

Driving and delivery are the quickest to start and the quickest to pay. According to Uber's help center, drivers can cash out available earnings to a bank account or debit card up to six times a day, with a fee shown in the app. DoorDash pays weekly by free direct deposit, offers Fast Pay once a day for $1.99, and pays after every dash into its Crimson account.

The catch is expenses. The BLS notes that ride-hailing drivers typically use their own vehicles and pay for fuel and maintenance, and that 86% of taxi drivers are self-employed, a group its wage data don't cover. Track your miles and costs from day one, because what you keep is your earnings minus those costs.

Seasonal and Shift Work

Retail, warehouse and restaurant jobs pay on a schedule, but they cost almost nothing to start, and employers withhold taxes for you. The BLS says retail workers often pick up extra shifts during holidays and other peak periods, and that part-time work is common for servers, whose pay data include tips. A seasonal warehouse or stocking job at the median of $18.38 an hour brings in about $184 for every 10 hours worked, before taxes.

Skill-Based Side Work

Tutoring, bookkeeping, writing and fitness training pay more per hour but take longer to build. The BLS says most tutors work part time, often evenings and weekends. Writers and authors earn a median of $36.98 an hour, but 65% are self-employed, so that median reflects employed writers, not freelancers starting out. Personal trainers generally must be certified before working with clients, while group fitness instructors can sometimes start first and certify later.

Care Jobs Close to Home

Pet sitting and babysitting are easy to start through neighbors, friends and apps, and you're often paid the same day. BLS figures here are a rough guide only: about a quarter of animal caretakers and of childcare workers are self-employed, and the survey doesn't cover private household workers, which includes many babysitters.

Taxes on Gig and Side Income in 2026

  • Form 1099-K: The One, Big, Beautiful Bill retroactively restored the old threshold. Payment apps and online marketplaces have to file a 1099-K only when your payments exceed $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year, per the IRS. They may still send one for less.
  • Other 1099 forms: For payments made in 2026, the reporting threshold for certain other information returns rose to $2,000, per IRS Publication 1099.
  • No form doesn't mean no tax. The IRS says you must report all income, even without a 1099. If your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more, you must file a return and pay self-employment tax.
  • Set money aside. Self-employment tax is 15.3% on 92.35% of net earnings, so $5,000 of net gig profit carries about $706 in self-employment tax before income tax. Pay quarterly estimated taxes, or raise the withholding at your main job.

See the IRS page on managing taxes for gig work and its Form 1099-K threshold FAQs for details.

Yes. The IRS says all income must be reported, and if your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more you must file and pay self-employment tax.

Payment apps and marketplaces must file a Form 1099-K when payments to you exceed $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, after the One, Big, Beautiful Bill restored that threshold. They can still send one for smaller amounts.

The BLS median for taxi drivers, shuttle drivers and chauffeurs was $18.25 an hour in May 2025, but it excludes self-employed drivers and doesn't subtract fuel and maintenance, so app drivers' take-home pay can differ.
