I Need Money Now: How to Raise Cash in 1 to 7 Days Without a Loan

Check your rate now! It’s free and available for any credit score.

If you need money in the next few days and don't want to borrow, the fastest sources are things you already own: items you can sell, purchases you can return and gig shifts you can cash out the same day. Slower sources, like unclaimed property and a tax refund, cost nothing to check and can still pay off within weeks. Below is how fast each one really pays as of October 2026, what it costs and where the catch is.

Sell Something This Week

Local cash sales are the only way to turn an item into money today. Electronics, tools, furniture, baby gear and gaming equipment tend to move fastest. Price a little under similar listings, post clear photos and answer messages quickly. Meet in a public place, ideally a police station lobby, and count cash before you hand anything over.

Online marketplaces reach more buyers but add shipping and payout time. On eBay, proceeds usually become available one to two days after the buyer's payment is confirmed, and your bank then takes one to three business days. eBay says that starting November 4, 2026, eligible US private sellers will get payouts on demand by default, so the money stays in your eBay balance until you withdraw it.

Instant payout fees are flat, so they hurt more on small sales. Mercari's $3 Instant Pay fee is 7.5% of a $40 sale but 1.5% of a $200 sale. If you can wait two to five business days, the free transfer keeps all of it. Unused gift cards count as items too; see where to sell gift cards for cash.

Gig Work That Pays Out the Same Week

Delivery and rideshare apps are the quickest jobs to start, but not instant. You'll need to sign up and pass the platform's checks before your first shift, which can take days. Once you're working, the money moves fast:

  • DoorDash: Fast Pay lets Dashers withdraw earnings once a day for $1.99 per transfer to a debit card. Standard weekly direct deposit is free.
  • Uber: Instant Pay lets drivers cash out up to six times a day for a small fee that varies by market. Funds usually arrive within minutes but can take up to two to three business days, depending on the bank. Weekly deposits are free and usually land on Thursdays.

Count your costs before you count your earnings. Gas, tolls and car wear come out of what you make. For steadier options, see 12 part-time jobs for extra income.

Money You May Already Have

  • Returns. Look at what you bought in the last 30 days that you haven't used. If you paid cash, many stores refund cash at the counter. Card refunds go back to the card and take several business days to post.
  • Unclaimed property. States hold money from forgotten bank accounts, final paychecks, utility deposits and insurance refunds. Searching is free on your state's official site, which you can find through unclaimed.org, run by the association of state unclaimed property administrators. Search every state you've lived in, under every name you've used. The FTC warns that state programs won't text you about unclaimed money and never charge a fee to release it.
  • A refund you're still waiting on. If you filed a return, check the status with the IRS Where's My Refund tool. Your IRS online account also shows your tax transcript, which tells you whether a refund was issued or applied to a debt.

Free Up Cash by Lowering This Month's Bills

Every dollar you don't have to pay this week works like a dollar raised. Two places to look: common banking fees you can avoid and cheaper gym memberships.

  • Ask for a new due date. Call your phone, insurance or card company and ask to move the due date past your next payday or to split the payment.
  • Ask about medical financial assistance. Nonprofit hospitals must have a written financial assistance policy. Ask for the application before you pay a large bill.
  • Pause subscriptions. Streaming, apps, meal kits and gym memberships can often be paused for a month rather than canceled.

If you need food, medicine or a shut-off stopped today rather than this week, start with what to do in the next hour.

If You Still Need to Borrow

If these sources don't cover the gap in time, compare borrowing options by cost and speed before you apply. LendUp is an online loan-matching service for $200 to $5,000; loans are made by licensed lenders in its network, and approval isn't guaranteed. Our page on getting a loan ASAP ranks the faster ways to borrow.
